seek-immediate-medical-treatmentYou should see a doctor immediately after an accident in Florida. This is best, but if not immediately after an accident, then as soon as possible thereafter. Any delay in treatment could have an adverse effect on your case.

Immediate treatment does not mean you must go to the emergency room. You can go to an urgent care facility or your primary care physician.  I do, however, recommend that you first see a medical doctor, as opposed to a chiropractor, at least in the beginning.

You will want to see a doctor immediately because if something is seriously wrong, you’ll want to know it early on. Also, insurance companies track when you first treated. If you waited too long to seek medical treatment, the insurance company will argue that you’re really not hurt. Many times people are hurt but they don’t want to make a big deal out of it, so they wait.  They think they’re just sore and it will get better with time. Many don’t want to have a personal injury claim, they just want to get better. Week and months go by and they’re worse off.  By this time, they’ve hurt their case, if not their physical condition by delaying treatment.

Initial Doctor Visit

During the initial visit the doctor will document your injuries. From the beginning, you should make all of your complaints known. What you tell the doctor, will be in your medical records.  Your medical records are how personal injury attorneys prove injuries in accident cases.  If it’s not in the medical records, it didn’t happen. By not telling you doctor everything, it could cost you money.

You will then want to start some type of regular, treatment and physical therapy program. The goal of course is to get better. You will treat until you reach maximum medical improvement. This simply means that you are as good as you’re going to get. You see, while you will eventually get better, it’s unlikely that you’ll be 100% better.  After the first few weeks you’ll likely start to experience improvement, then level off.  This leveling off or “plateauing” as I like to call it is reaching “maximum medical improvement.” Although every case is differently you’ll usually reach maximum medical improvement in 2 to 6 months after an accident.
